Pete Buttigieg (D.)
Updated: Oct 2, 2019
Quick Bio: Peter Buttigieg is one of the smart ones. He went to Harvard and is a Rhodes scholar. He is currently the mayor of South Bend, Indiana and a Lieutenant in the United States Navy Reserves.
Pros: He's young and smart. He's also only one of two candidates that are currently either running a campaign or have an exploratory committee that has served in the military (the other being Democrat Tulsi Gabbard). He's done some good work for the City of South Bend based primarily around redevelopment.
Cons: Outside of his development acumen, Buttigieg is best known for being the first and or youngest for a list of things making him both revered and infamous:
Youngest elected mayor of a city of over 100k residents;
1st openly gay municipal executive in the state of Indiana;
Fired the 1st African-American Chief of Police for South Bend (and likely the youngest do so);
Possibly the 1st to withdraw from the race for DNC Chair, while giving his nomination speech.
Conclusion: To be completely fair, it takes a lot of courage to run for office and for that, Pete should be applauded. He will likely turn a few heads and make some noise from the heartland. With some earned media and a little luck, we will likely hear more from this upstart in the coming years. The Democratic Party has a promising future with people like Pete among it ranks. However, this race has major implications and should be left for serious contenders.
